If you've been holding off on getting a solid-state drive, SanDisk's latest will make the wait worthwhile.
The flash storage vendor announced June 2 that the Extreme Pro replaces the Extreme II drive that came out last year. This is a standard-size 2.5-inch SATA internal drive, but beyond that it's supposed to be unlike any other you've seen.
SanDisk says the new drive will "supercharge a PC or game console with 24-7 consistent high performance."
nCache Pro Technology
According to SanDisk, Extreme Pro SSD employs new technology, called nCache Pro, designed to optimize read and write speeds and drive endurance. The technology also protects data stored on the drive.
As the result, the Extreme Pro promises to offer consistent performance even when multitasking, with low latency, over a long period of time. It also uses very little power, just between 0.13W and 0.15W during operation, and therefore should increase a laptop's battery life up to 33 percent when compared with a regular hard drive. It also works with desktop computers.

Designed for pro consumers and gamers
SanDisk says the new drive is designed for gamers and professionals who need to do a lot of data- and graphics-intensive tasks, such as movie editing, 3D gaming, or Auto CAD 3D designing. The drive offers a top random read of up to 100K IOPS and random write of up to 90K IOPS, stats that are among the highest on the market. In sequential performance, it's supposed to deliver up to 550MBps in reading and 520MBps for writing, again, among the highest for a standard consumer-grade SSD.
The Extreme Pro also comes with SanDisk's SSD Dashboard software, which makes it possible to monitor the drive's performance in real time, and perform firmware updates and other tasks to make sure the drive to maintain peak performance.
Friendly pricing meets industry-first warranty
The new SanDisk Extreme Pro will be available in June in 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities that are slated to cost $189, $369 and $599. This means at launch it will cost significant less than $1 per gigabyte and the street price will likely be even lower.
The most impressive thing about the new drive, however, is the 10-year warranty, twice as long as existing warranties. SanDisk says it is providing this type of warranty to show the company's commitment and its confidence in the new drive's quality.
We'll see how the drive turns out in reality, but so far this is very exciting news. Check back for CNET's full review of the Extreme Pro.
